No Battery

Post by davomoto » Tue Sep 11, 2007 3:06 pm

I'm starting the build on my CB77 cafe custom, and was wondering if I can run it without a battery? I have seen battery eliminators for sale, and am wondering if this would work. I am also considering installing an e-ignition, and will this be a problem with no battery? Has anyone tried this? I want to remove battery box and all brackets from frame before painting. Thaks in advance!

Dave, I've heard of battery eliminators but never have seen one so that I don't know. I am sure if you go with the electronic ignition you will need a battery. Hope someone else can enlighten us on the battery eliminator. Kustommusic

If you use the Probe electronic ign. you MUST use a battery or you will fry it. I have been running them for about 4 or 5 years now and have not had a single problem with it. Plus the guy that designed it Mark is a top notch fella that is always willing to answer any question you may have about the setup.
I have no FHE with runnin a batterless points setup but I would imagine you could run somthing like a Mighty Max powerbox which is what the Brit guys use.

i know a cdi type electronic ignition can run off a magneto. is there a mag conversion for the 305's out there somewhere? does that battery eliminator thing turn the alternator in to a mag?

There is a magneto ignition for racing on the market that bolts in place of the altenator. It'll cost ya about $795 and is plug and play. Wouldnt be to good for the street cuz you would have no way of powering lights.

Thanks for all the info guys! It will be a sreet bike, but I'm not too worried about lights. Brake and tail should be fine, with a dummy headlight. I'll go LED on tail light setup, draws much less current. I will also look into power pack as suggested.

Thanks, Davomoto

So, I found something on a google search that gave me the nubers to find a capacitor to replace battery. I can't seem to find the article again. I took the information to my local Electronic plus and the sold me the part in picture. I do remeber it was a " computer grade capacitor" The numbers on it are TECH CAP 47000 MFD, 20 VAC, +_ 20% 85 c . I think it cost about 50.00. I made a bracket for it, and so far the bike starts, and has done a couple of very short rides, as I'm still working on jetting the carbs for velocity stacks.
