A real puzzler

Post by aerojack7654 » Wed Jun 12, 2013 9:54 pm

Hi folks,
As some may remember I finally got my SuperHawk (the BlackHawk) up and running w/ a Sachse ignition installed. After really enjoying the bike for several weeks, the control box toasted itself. I've been struggling to get the unit back to Volker Sachse (thank you Fedex, long story), so while I'm waiting for that resolution, I impatiently sent off for a Charlies Place ignition. Got it installed, timed and started up, but it was running fine on the right cylinder, and backfiring through the carb and periodically down the exhaust on the left - generally not firing regularly on the left at all. Pulled out the timing light, and verified the static timing as well as the advance for both sides - looked good. checked to see that there is a good spark on the left, nice and blue (new coils). The carbs are working as expected, there was raw gas on the left plug. As I mentioned, the bike was running beautifully w/ the Sachse ignition a few weeks ago. Again, the timing is coming out fine for both cylinders statically as well as with my dynamic timing light - so what the heck?!?
I think that the Sachse unit is finally on its way back, but this is really weird, I'm not sure what could be causing the left cylinder to be so screwed up. Any observations would be welcome!

Thanks,
Jack

I would try putting the points back on to verify.

My Charlie's ignition for my 160 failed on install. He has great stuff, but I am not sure about that box. Need to send it back to him.

I was stumped for weeks on why my new build wouldn't start.

Without a baseline, you will be chasing your tail.

Do you have an upgraded rectifier, and what is your battery reading? A low battery can kill one side, but you say you have spark, so maybe not.

You might try, if you have not, a fresh plug.

If you took the carb slides out, you could have a loose needle.

I also recently had a main jet fall out into the bowl. Have no idea how it shook loose. But it make one side way rich and hard to fire, with raw gas on the plug.

You could also shut off the gas with it running, and see if it improves firing. That would suggest a loose needle or jet or something else flooding.

Good luck. Nice to see a relatively near by SuperHawk!

A followup to the "puzzler", and thanks to Jlovvorn for the pointers - fortunately, or unfortunately, most of those had already been checked out. Basically what the problem was was the fact that I had installed new aftermarket coils that had no wiring included, and I had wired the coil wire colors using the Sachse wiring diagram, which uses green and yellow wires that go to left and right coils respectively. Charlies Place ignition wiring uses blue and yellow with (what I found out after talking to Charlie since his instructions do not point that out ) the blue goes to right coil and the yellow goes to the left. Silly me, I assume everyone is playing with the same color scheme, so basically, I could only get one cylinder timed right, the other one was 90 deg out of phase, thus the backfiring. Once I got the wiring info, everything was good. Having gone through this now with both the dream and the superhawk with Charlies ignition, I think that I'll put together a little more descriptive directions, since his provided directions are thin at best. I must give him credit though, if you get him on the phone, he will give you very detailed support. I figure that a little more description and a diagram or two would be really helpful in a process that is not that hard technically, but can be convoluted.
I was wondering if this forum has what I saw on the GS1000 Suzuki forum, where members can write up detailed descriptions of certain repair or maintenance, and there is a place on the forum were this info is compiled. It is a good place to check out before you start a particular procedure, and you don't have to use the search to find it. Just a thought.

Thanks for the help,

Jack
