Points cam installation

Post by caferacers » Sat Mar 20, 2010 12:41 am

I have searched for a post regarding this issue but no luck. I have recently acquired 5, yes five, 1967/68 CL77's in various states of completeness. I have assembled 3 complete decent ones and am now trying to make them run. I have read Ed's recipe several times. My question is when rebuilding the top end, I have the crank at the t position, the timing chain with the master link at the circle marks on the advance unit and it is at the top and square. You can insert the points cam so the mark is up or down... The engine I am working on had obviously been recently disassembled and never run.. new valves, fresh cut seats and clean pistons.. the point cam mark was up which seems wrong and makes it impossible for the valves to be closed when following Ed's great advice. Am I right in assuming that it was incorrectly assembled and I need to reverse it. Hope this makes sense. Thanks from someone who is primarily a British bike guy but who now after working on these, sees why the Japanese killed the British bike market.

The line on the points cam must point to the "O"/"DOT" on the cam chain sprocket assy. .............lm
