Dang. Started running crappy again. Both sides have spark, and points are gapped at .014. Brand new plugs are 2 days old. They are a dry black (not sooty, and not grey) If I clean plugs, it will idle fine for a while. When riding it hesitates and occasionally runs good for a few seconds before going back to hesitation. Could the new plugs be shot already?
thanks, Kent

Welcome along to our 'nut'-house!

Sounds like shite in the air filter, maybe fuel and/or poor carb setup. It smacks of rich mixture (too much fuel/not enough air). I know that seems contradictory, but:
  • First things first: has the bike been stood for a few years, unused? Drop the float bowl off the carb and see if the fuel in there is clean or if it's gooey.

Is there rust in the tank? Check the fuel strainer and bowl in the petcock for foreign matter.
Proper carb setup is essential -- clean air filter, clear jets, correct float level, needle position, air-screw setting. Come back here for further advice on that, ONCE you've resolved to possibility of bad fuel flow.

Follow a logical pattern to establish the problem, but take it one step at a time. There's no point in altering two things in one go; if the problem gets fixed, then you won't know which of your alterations cleared it.

Good luck and regards,
