Carb rod adjustments..how do you do it?

Post by red75ride » Wed Apr 16, 2008 1:46 pm

Hi again,
I've been reading in the forums that if my bike (CB77) is running rich I should raise the rod in the carb. How does one do that? What is involved and will I have to do it to both carbs if I do it to one?
Thanks, Larry

You can adjust carbs independently. But check your spark plugs first and decide from visual check which carb is running rich, or if both are rich. The "rods" are called needle jets and you adjust them as follows:

1. Remove the nut holding rear of gas tank. Drain gas and remove crossover gas line under tank so you can tilt tank up enough to give access to top of carbs.
2. Unscrew carb top, where cable goes into the carb.
3. Pull the top off the carb, and it'll come out with the throttle valve (the cylindrical "slide" that goes up and down in carb bore).
4. Compress the throttle valve spring and disconnect the throttle cable from the throttle valve (slide).
5. Look inside the throttle valve (slide) and pop out the retainer clip that holds the needle jet in place.
6. To lean out the mixture, you need to make the needle jet sit LOWER in the carb. Look at the top of the needle jet and see which notch the e-clip is in. To lean out the mixture, pull the e-clip off and put it one notch UP, so that the needle jet will sit lower.
7. Put it all back together in reverse order.

CAUTION: If you do both carbs at same time, be sure to put each throttle valve (slide) back in the carb it came from. Swapping throttle valves inadvertently WILL cause both carbs to run rich. You can verify that the throttle valves are in the correct carbs by looking through the bore from the inlet side, and looking at the bottom edge of the slides. You should see a slight upward curved cutout on the bottom edge of the slide. If not, your throttle valves are in backwards and may be the reason for the rich condition.

At what point is the engine rich?
Idle, cruise, high RPM?
If you change one carb you will need to match the other to what you set.
HONDA recommends the e-clip be in second from bottom slot of the needle, air screw 1 1/8-1 1/4-1 1/2 open from bottom to start to adjust/balance the carbs.
Main jet of 135 and slow jet of 42. ..................lm
