Adjusting throttle cable

Can someone tell me if how to do throttle cable adjustments? Picked up a 1965 super hawk and had to put a new cable on it bought 2 ones short ones long, long one on now seems like to much play the shorter one seems to tight. Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks
