seat cover trim removal?? (1963 CB77 )

Post by redblk63 » Sat Jun 26, 2010 9:06 pm

I am replacing my 1963 CB77's ripped cover with the Canadian sourced seatcover.

Since the old foam is so ragged, my plan is to add a 1/2" layer of new foam over the old cover, and then put the new cover on top. I may have to cut off the bottom part of the old cover where it wraps under the seat pan, to make room for the new to be clamped down.

Question:
How to remove and reuse the old metal trim strip? The small (5 mm?) nuts just spin without releasing. The new cover did not come with trim.

Thanks,
Larry - Pasadena

I cut the nuts off the screws with a Dremel(cutoff wheel) or even a pair if large side cutters. They are nothing special , small machine screws. Youll see how they just slide in notches in the trim after you get it apart. My cover fortunately came w/ new fasteners, but I'm sure you could find something at the local hardware. As the fasteners are seperate from the chrome trim.

Thanks for the answers

You answered two questions! First, just cut or break them off. Second, I was worried the studs might be brazed to the trim, and your explanation is they are just screws captured into slots on the trim backside.

Thanks again, and I am headed to the garage!

All done. Taking off old trim strip was the hardest part, aside from the skinned knuckle. Those bend-down tabs are sharp, especially when your hand slips while pulling hard on the old vinyl!
