Well "Because I'm not afraid to tap to the ISO I found that "THE THREADS ARE ABLE TO HOLD THE SCREW WITH NORMAL PRESSURE". (same as the JIS)
What is the impact for a restoration.
YA CAN'T TELL WHAT THREAD THE SCREW IS"!
Locations like the points area, lever perches and head light rim can be installed with screws from any normal hardware store and all ya need to do is get/have the ISO tap.
For the perches I grind the end of the tap sort of flat to get as many threads without coming out the side.
Try this TIM and ya may be surprised how simple and cost and time effective this is. .................lm
LM,
If I understand you correctly, you are saying take the ISO M5 x 0.8mm tap that can easily be
bought on McMasterCarr, and tap a M5 x 0.8mm threaded hole DIRECTLY ON TOP OF the current threaded hole. This means you would have both M5x0.9 and M5x0.8 in the same hole. Am I understanding you correclty?

Well, I guess I didn't specifically ask you to explain if I wasn't understanding you correctly. Let me formally ask.
If I don't understand you correctly, could you please explain your method where you switch from the M5x0.9mm thread to a M5x0.8 thread? You said you "See what would happen if I tapped to the ISO thread". What do you mean by "...tapped to..."

What will happen if you run a m5x0.8 tap into a hole that is already tapped for m5x0.9 is that the tap will recontour the existing threads to m5x0.8. The resulting threads will be thinner than if they had originally been m5x0.8, but the bolt will thread in there. There is concern if the bolt will be subjected to significant strain, then it could pull out due to the thinner threads. For a non-stress application like a generator cover or points cover, I don't think it would be a problem. I have done the opposite, where I have taken the M5x0.8 screws and rethreaded them to m5x0.9 thread. The end result is the same. I'm pretty sure that there is an old thread on this site where someone included nice diagrams of how the threads will form, but I couldn't find it.

I bought a cheap helicoil set and converted mine to ISO. Modern screws fit and I get better than original strength........
