ca77 gear swap

Post by oldbikedude » Sat Jul 18, 2015 7:36 am

Hello, I have searched for my answers & found a lot of great info but I am still unsure. I was hoping someone "in the know" would be patient with me and answer a few questions. I have read about the 2nd / 3rd gear swap. Are folks swapping the splined sliding gears or the gears that use the cotters. I read in my copy of Bill Silvers engine repair guide that this will work in a CA Dream as well but the ratios are different. Has any Dream owners on here done this swap & how do you like the change. I happened to have a new spare 28t 2nd counter shaft gear & was wondering if that could replace the 27t 3rd. If that is possible what would that do to the ratios. I am not looking for exact calculations just real experienced explanations. Thanks in advance for everyone's help.

In my opinion there is no reason to swap gears on a ca77. They are evenly spaced to start with. I did cross the gears on my cl77, this put the spacing about equal to the ca77.

Thanks Stan....I didn't know if it was worth doing or not. Thanks for your opinion.

My graph, below shows the ratio change and spacing with "X'-d gears compared with regular setup.

You can see that the Dream ratios do not change very much on "X"-ing.

Wow, thanks G-man....that is a great chart. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I'll be leaving my ratios alone.
