primary chain wear and sprocket movement

Post by OldStan » Sun Mar 20, 2011 3:45 pm

I have a couple of questions;

My primary chain has some unusual damage/wear on about 6 or so pins. Is this enough to junk the chain? My guess is yes. It doesn't seem to be badly worn measuring by Jensen's method.

Also the sprocket has some movement on the clutch basket, about 1 mm, is this normal or enough to be a concern?

One more thing, how much wear on the kickstart side bushing side face it too much?

If it were mine, I'd send that chain to be recycled, but if you ride gently only on Sundays to church and back maybe it would be OK for a little while longer.

At least it's only the rollers cracking. We break side plates and then they go bang.

Fast Fred has the bushings. I have a spare primary chain in pretty perfect order.

Hi,

And what about the material out of the chain if you ride gently and keep the chain ?

I suggest ya replace all the warn/damaged parts.
If the clutch basket sprocket moves the basket needs to be replaces also. .......lm

Thanks for the info. I'm planning on replacing the chain & bushing. The chain also had some wear on the inside of the links on one side which was odd because neither of the sprockets show any corresponding wear. This engine has been apart before so some of this could be previous damage.

The clutch basket has me curious. The sprocket has a small amount of turning movement, I almost didn't notice it, but it also has noticable side movement, yet the rivets are tight. Is there a cushion or something missing? I thought about welding it to the steel plate (if there's clearance for the chain), but that might cause an allignment problem.
