getting into 2nd gear

Post by 68Cb77 » Mon Nov 10, 2008 6:37 pm

So, I've got the bike on the road, and everything is more or less working fantastic....but shifting from 1st to 2nd is sometimes a problem....I've had old bikes before and realize they all have little quirks. About 1 in 20 shifts, it doesn't go into 2nd. The shifter will let me go back to first, but won't let me go up. I rebuilt the top end, but never touched the bottom. I'm guessing the shift fork is worn a bit, but the bike only had 12,000 miles on it, so I thought everything might be o.k.....Am I looking at a winter time bottom-end tear-down? Is this common to this bike? Thanks, John.

At times the problem can/will be outside the engine with this problem. Lets hope.
As you look at the front of the shift rod you will see a gear change arm which is on the end of the shift arm.
That part MUST be at 11:00 as ya look at it. If it's at 12:00 the linkage jams and won't allow the shaft to move the shift fork inside the engine to fully move the gears. .........lm

o.k. I'll check, but I think it's pretty close to 11:00. Also had a massive oil leak as the seal on the end of the clutch push rod came out all by it's self....That makes quite a mess!...At least I know I have good oil flow........A new one was still available from Honda. Thanks Ed.

You can get practically every seal for our bikes from most bearing or hydraulics suppliers. You just need the number from the side of the old seal (id-od-width, in mm).

My CB baulks 1-2 & sometimes 2-3 at times, but my clutch does drag a little. Will it snick into neutral from 1st or 2nd at idle OK?
