Years ago I had a similar problem on the lever that clamps to the shaft so I cut the top off the lever and sawed through the remaining bit so it was split all the way through and it always clamps up tight. Also used a longer bolt with a nut on it to make sure. It still works fine.

I'm going to machine up a linkage set out of stainless for my CB77. That way I can control all of the clearances.
