Is this right? Pawl clicks when no engine load?

Post by sdaigle240 » Thu Sep 17, 2015 8:56 am

Oh boy, not sure if i messed something up.

67 CB77 engine.
I replaced the pawl, pin, spring and brass bushing. the old spring was broke into pieces so perhaps i didn't notice this noise before? I of course checked shift operation prior to putting back together and it seemed fine. still shifts fine.

this reminded me of a bicycle cassette... it clicks when free wheeling and then the pawl locks under load. hopefully thats the case because im ready to ride this thing before the snow flies.

in the video im just turning the sprocket so i can see the ratios change by watching the speed of the shaft the basket rides on. i will gladly provide any other pictures or videos that may assist.

I appreciate your input guys and gals!

Rotate the kickstart to the stop, that lifts the pawl against the stop and stops it clicking.

humm... i turned it counter clock wise till it stopped (being a forward kick and all) and im pretty sure it was still clicking. I fiddled a bunch but couldn't seem to get it to stop clicking. I will more diligently confirm and report back. Hopefully i was just being a dummy about testing its operation and not a dummy about how i put it back together. thank you, G.

Turn clockwise. That's what the spring does..... Counter clockwise is how it cranks the engine.

Ahh yes there are two gears.so despite it being a forward kick the actual internal shaft spins opposite to the kickstarter, duh!! So with that new found enlightenment, a vice grip and holding it all the way as the spring would do with the cover on.... It works!!! G thank you for always being so damn helpful. Loosing the collerd shirt and slacks and putting her back together now!

Steve

If you look carefully at what's happening. There is a large headed bolt screwed in the left side that is part of the gear selector mechanism. That sticks through the case wall and the plain end of that bolt acts as a stop and lifts the pawl away from the ratchet until you operate the kickstart.
