I think I understand you. The large nut that's in front of the thing I need to bend (similar to the kind that is on the camshaft) is facing the wrong direction?

That means someone has been in here before me, then. This is the first time I've cracked this puppy.

Alright, here's a video of me trying to shift this thing. It's actually pretty cool to see some of the inner workings. I hear you guys talking about "dog ears" all the time, I think that's referring to this "C shaped open ended wrench looking thing that presses against different posts sticking out of the side of the shift drum."

As you can see, it will not shift past second, a few times wiggling it around I've gotten it to go into other gears but if I understand the transmission assembly, I'm pretty sure that C shaped mechanism pushes against those posts moving the shift drum to the next position, and I think it's getting stuck somewhere on the shift drum.

Am I on the right track?

It won't shift without the transmission turning. I was worried about my Dream doing the same thing. When the engine was running and took it for a ride it shifted perfectly.

I've had the same thought and concern, BUT, it exhibits the exact same symptom while running. It just won't shift from first to second without kicking the hell out of it. I'll do neutral to first, first to neutral just beautifully, though.

The dogs are internal and engage neighbouring gears, they are on the side of the gear. The forks which have one end in the selector drum slide the gears to engage.

I think you need to research a little more. Consult your shop manual, Bill Silver guide etc.

If there is excessive wear and the selector shaft moves too much length ways things can bind.

Unfortunately I think it would be best to drop the bottom case and inspect given it occurs while running.

Replacing this part can help http://www.classichondarestoration.com/ ... od_66.html but isn't necessarily the root cause.
