I bought a used transmission and got servicable parts from it. what I said previously about the dogs;
as far as the dogs go, I noticed that only one dog engages when pulling, possibly explaining why it only slipped out of gear part of the time, that being when the one badly tapered dog tried to engage. The other two were only slightly rounded on the end
The gears I got from the replacement transmission, supposed to be from a CA as well, engage all 3 dogs on the 24 tooth gear at once. The teeth are narrower on the 27 tooth gear, engage fully in 2nd gear but only partially when in 4th. This isn't a problem since in 4th it's not tranferring any power through the other shaft. The overall width of the gear is the same, but the cut of the dogs on the old gear had considerably more cast in taper.

Were these production changes in the gears? Mine is a 63, but the case has been opened before (evident because of some prying damage to the cases.)
