kickstart/pawl/1st gear questions

Post by greg78gs750 » Thu Feb 04, 2010 8:56 pm

hi all,

before i started my rebuild, my 305 dream kicked over great. 4 out of 5 times. on that 5th time, the kick lever would jump with a thunk and not turn the engine over. the pawl looks ok to me, i noticed that the 1st gear kickstart teeth seem unevenly worn in spots, could this be the cause of the intermittent jumping? thanks in advance!Image

the reason i am asking is i want to put this thing together sooner. i would love to know if i should replace that gear, and if so where i could find one in good shape. i plan on replacing the pawl anyway.....thanks!

That uneven wear in the gear doesn't look good to me either. Someone with more operational experience can chime in as to how much it will effect it's performance. How's the spring and pin under the pawl? The end that touches the pawl should be nice and round. Mine was flat before I replaced it. Between that and an old spring, I was loosing almost 3mm of push on the pawl.

One thing I've learned is all those little things tend to add up all over. Sometimes in a chain reaction, sometimes less direct, but in the end it always adds up to a bike that isn't performing properly and only getting worse with time.

Ya may find it hard to believe but the gear is made with flat rather than a sharp high spots between the area where the KS pawl enters as ya move the kick lever.
The wear in this area is "the round area of the Pawl and it needs to be round and after long time use it will wear down".
The pic shows the side rather than the contact point of the pawl.
Have another pic of the contact area of the pawl? ..................lm
