I-man, do you have a manual? While the side case is off disassemble the clutch lifter pieces, clean, and reassemble with fresh grease..............................D

i have the bill silvers books. should the ball bearing come out of the threaded metal piece?

The ball bearing is held in by the grease

It certainly should. Or should I say "aye I"?!

With the r/h casing off, pull the lifter rod and measure it; just a thought. Don't run the engine with it out -- it'll piss oil all over the place!

I've been re-reading this topic -- you can see the clutch plates separating, so there must be something else causing the clutch ass'y to bind, either within the tranny or within the clutch itself. Can you move the bike back & forth in-gear with the clutch centre/plates removed?

yes, with the clutch plates removed, the rear wheel turns while in gear. also the ball bearing is present. How long should the push rod be? i guess i'm trying to figure it out, with as much certainty as possible, then replace the problem. I wish my resources were such that I could just start replacing parts until the problem was solved, but alas... thanks again to everyone for your help, and keep the suggestions coming please.
