Scott, that's no CB kickstart lever! And it looks like you have a CL side cover. The CB kicks forwards because of the footpeg's location.
PM LM, he'll tell you how to release the CL side cover.
EDIT: Ha! Just seen your edit!
How to remove the kick start lever to replace clutch cable?

maybe you just need to bang (tap firmly) around outside of it...but given the scrambler part(s) I'd wait for a definitive answer from Ed before banging too hard. On my bike the kickstarter stuff just pulled off splined shaft to rear of broken sprocket in attached pic, best I recall. Apologies for nasty pic, bike was fresh from barn. My engine looks much better now. Good luck. Lee
Apparently I just need to yank the thing out. It felt pretty stuck, so I didn't want just go around forcing things. But now I know. Can't wait to get back at it. Thanks Loud Mouse!
LOUD MOUSE wrote:As you have been told you have a CL72/77 cover. Thant said you have removed a part that didn't need to be removed. Once ALL the SCREWS are removed the cover can be pulled off the engine. At times the kick lever part you took the lever off of will be stuck to the splines of the kick shaft and you will need to (in this case) put a round screw driver in the hole where ya removed the pin and wiggle the part as you pull on the case and screw driver. ............................lm

Scott, there are usually r/h CB casings plenty on ebay, usually at a reasonable price and often with the kickstart gears in place. Be careful if you buy one that's cracked -- a common occurence if the cover screws aren't kept tight -- as the old alloy, being porous, gets oil-saturated and can be a right SOB to weld. You'll need to obtain a proper kick lever also. The clutch release mechanism parts are common to both models.
As you can see from the fiche, the kickstart joint (9) should slide off the shaft (Ed's advice to insert a long-bladed screwdriver into the kickstart's pinchbolt hole and wiggle it off is a gem!); here's the CL cover & parts:

It took a bit more than a wiggle, but I got it off. See more here: 1962 Superhawk Restoration: Here I go
Thanks for letting me know its SUPPOSE to come off.
