Exactly what the subject says.
66 CA77. Previous owner replaced the clutch and front brake cables, but it seems that the clutch cable has acquired a bit of rust - moisture + he didn't ride it all that much. On the test ride, I was able to move it through all of the gears just fine, so I think the clutch is OK and I'm looking only at a cable issue.
It's just tight, like the cable is pulling on something. I have small hands, so I can't really squeeze hard enough to ride it more than a few blocks without some serious cramping. I ride other bikes with a clutch, so my left hand is as strong as it's going to get I think.
I tried to spray some WD-40 down there, which helped free it up some. But I still need to make a big leap forward in terms of getting it less sticky. I loosened up the cable adjuster as much as it would go, which helped some but not enough.
At this point, does it make any sense to source and fit a new cable, or is there some way of working with this one? Is there some other cable lube I could use that might be slicker?
(If you haven't caught my other threads, this is my first MC, but I've been working on old scooters for years. I have a general familiarity with 2-wheeled vehicles, but it's okay to talk to me as if I know nothing).
sticky sticky sticky clutch cableYou'll need to get a cable luber, it clamps on to the cable, and has an orfice for the tube of your spray can WD40 is more solvent than lube, so I'd suggest a more appropriate lube, chain and cable lube, silicone spray etc. Also, a grease gun needs to be used to grease the fittings on the right engine sidecover, or better yet, remove the sidecover, clean out the 40 year old grease, and put some nice new grease in there. There are no gaskets or oil involved with removing this coer. Good luck, and let us know what you find!
davomoto I actually have a cable luber clamp, I'll give it a whirl with something more slippery.
The engine sidecover tip is great, I'll do that as well while I'm working with grease. I'm starting to be really sad I'm going out of town this weekend, because I want to get this stuff sorted and go out for a ride, the weather is supposed to be great.
