steering bearings ??my two cents..

Post by rrtccp » Wed Mar 09, 2011 8:48 pm

I just noticed a topic about the steering bearings,, and since i just took mine apart i thought i would mention what worked for me... to prevent loosing all the bearings i loosened the top nut and once it started to turn signifigantly i noticed the bottom end of the stalk was also starting to fall so as i got close to the middle of the threads ,, what i did was push the bottom race back up as far as it would go and then tie strapped it to the steering lock... and then proceeded to remove the top nut,, once it was off i just used a strong magnet to "touch" all the bearings and pick them up that way and just dropped them into a zip lock bag..., and then i placed a new bigger zip lock freezer bag around the bottom race and then cut the tie strap off and slowly lowered the race and bearings into the bag and counted them before removing the bag,, there was still 4 bearings remaining in the neck stuck to some grease,, well one touch with the magnet and bingo they all stuck and i just dropped them into the bag... all in all there was 18 up top and 19 in the bottom....hope this helps someone...

Magnets

Magnets are a nice tool and I wouldn't think magnetizing your steering bearings would pose a problem. Beware using a magnet around any engine components such as gears or cams. Wouldn't want any bits of metal to be atracted to these parts once put into service.
