I have had my 63 CB77 on the road for almost a year now, and it is a lot of fun. The LM-supplied 4 over pistons are working great. And Rick's Vintage was able to supply a much needed NOS 2nd gear. It sure does not take much wear before gear dogs are done!
One problem has been a sharp rap to the spine whenever hitting bumps, and those hurt at highway speeds. Cranking the preload to max was not the solution. I assume the problem is missing rubber bumpers on the shock rods.
Would you believe it, the showy SHOWA shock absorbers from a 1971 CB450 that happened to be sitting in my garage drop right in. What an improvement they make!
Of course, if I ever get the 450 engine freed and running I will need to buy some new ones, but that may never happen.
I hope someone else can use the information that there are a lot of commonality among Honda's shock absorbers. On the other hand, if I have made a serious mistake and am doomed I am sure someone will point it out.
CB450 shocks work in a pinch

My bad. Picture above with chrome cover is old shock. New one from CB450 is below.
It does not look stock, but my bike is just a rider. I like the way it looks OK, but it is surely not very original. Some of the bikes on this site look original and are absolutely beautiful. On the other hand, I do ride mine on dirt fire roads through the local mountains.
