That missing piece is probably not in the engine. Looks like some previous owner tried to improperly pry out that retaining ring and chipped the case.
Some metal filings are normal in the crankcase if the previous owner never drained the oil properly either. I bet you will have some in the filter as well. I would take Davo up on his offer.

How does one (does one?) clean out the oil filter?
