Air filter hose

Post by Kigsby » Fri Dec 16, 2011 10:40 pm

I have a 1962 Dream 305 and I just bought a new rubber air filter hose because the one I had was cracked and split. The new one doesn't fit. It's too short by about a half inch. I don't know if they sent the wrong part - or did the '62's use one from a different model? I'm going to return it, but I'm not sure what to order. I saw this on ebay. Anyone use one of these filters that attach directly to the carb?

The one in the picture above will work but they don't filter all that well. I use a Uni foam sock filter on mine. Once its installed you don't even really know its there.

I use one of those Unis on my Dream too. Works swell. You could probably just put it directly onto the carb but I ended up putting it on with the tapered rubber tube. It might not make much difference but I'm sure that tube has a little bit of a venturi effect.

My parts book doesn't show any difference in parts #'s for air cleaner or rubber hose based on serial #'s........so, the question is why is the one you got too short? Sounds like they sent you the wrong one if it is a different length than the original.

If you have stock exhaust, I would recommend the stock filter and tube to ease tuning issues if possible.

I ended up using the uni pod as well, but recessed it from the carb with a piece of radiator hose:

Was it used? Sometimes the ends where the clamps sit rip off pretty clean leaving you a 1/2-inch too short... Check the picture - There should be a relief on both ends where the clamp sits. You can see that one is about to lose its 1/2"

Those are hard to find in good condition or NOS. There's a reproduction on ebay from Thailand that may be OK (maybe that's the one you ordered?). They do come up used in decent shape from time to time on ebay, but look carefully.

Not sure if the air tubes on the CA95, CA160 are similar enough to cause confusion but you could look that up on cmsnl

I bought it new from Classic Honda Restoration. Don't like to order stuff from overseas if I don't have to just in case there's a problem. I'm finding there's alot more similarities on my bike to a CB77. I think there were alot of changes going on around 1962-63. My left crankcase cover looks like the CB77, not the CA77. I think I'm going to ask Tim at CHR if he knows if the CB77 tube is longer. If not I think I'll get a Uni filter and hook it up to the new air tube and see how that works. The original filter is in great shape and I'd rather use it, but I need a tube that fits better to use it. Thanks all for your help!

Some photos and engine numbers may help identify the issue here. CB is dual carb and the air tubes are not similar.
