You're probably correct, but ran into a number of bikes when I was working at a bike shop that did have the crossover lines.
The tank on the Kawasaki KLR's have deep side pockets that tend to capture a lot of RES fuel that makes it unusable. The petcock is on the left side, and the trick is to lean the bike over to the left as far as possible to allow fuel captured on the RH side to make its way to the left. Can give you ~10 extra miles if you're careful and gentle on the throttle to try and find a station.
