Dripping gas....stuck float ?

Post by danielzink » Fri Apr 14, 2017 5:09 pm

Hey,

Took the Dream for its maiden voyage since the (second) carb rebuild.

I put all the old jets and needle back in...pretty much just used the rubber seals from the rebuild kit

:/

Anyhow - no more hanging idle (or revs).

Bike runs great.

See my previous post. The floats were "bent" for lack of a better word.

I got them straight and then set them to the proper 26.5mm

Just got back from a quick ride around the block.

Shut the bike down and walked away. Came back 10 minutes later to a huge puddle of gas on the floor.

Shut the petcock off.

Gas is leaking from the clear tube that comes off the bowl.

Need hints :)

Thanks, Dan

Okay, after doing some reading....

I turned the gas back on and banged on the bowl housing with the handle of a screwdriver....after a second or two the leaking stopped...

Sound like a bit of yuck has gotten in and the float needle is/was stuck...

welp....<sigh>....at least its relatively easy to remove the carb to clean it...again

:D

I think most folks agree that you should always shut the petcock off when the engine is not running. It's a good habit to get into. Be sure and check your oil for gasoline contamination too. I'm not sure about your model but when the bowl overflows, it can send gas all the way down to the crank case. You don't want to run your engine with that in there.

As a followup.....

I decided to take my carb apart (again!).....

Any time I turned on the petcock gas would just pour onto the floor out of the bowl overflow tube..

I figured I had a stuck needle..

Upon removing the pin I went to set my float assembly aside to begin removal of the needle....and...I noticed....there was a slight errr.."sloshing" inside one of the floats...

Sure enough...there was a thin spot on the float that when I barely touched it with a dental pick...poked a hole right through the brass...

So....I emptied out the float...cleaned the offending thin spot...opened up the thin spot...scotchbrite'd it..little bit of flux...some solder...and it's airtight once again.

I sunk it in a jar of water to test for airtight-ness and all is good.

Dressed the solder with a fine file...a little more scotchbrite-ing ...and I reinstalled it.

Petcock on....no puddle of fuel on the floor....and the bike seems to run better that it has so far !

All in all - a banner day.

Great job, always good to hear of a problem diagnosed followed by a successful repair, should be an inspiration to the rest of us!
