The Dream I bought had the stock petcock minus the filter bowl. By the time I bought the bowl and the rebuild kit it would have cost close to $100. So I looked at the alternatives. The picture below is the adapter for the tank ($19), the petcock (early Harley 3/8" pipe thread - $20). The three screws holding mine had to be drilled out so I needed the JIS screws. I elected to drill and retap the holes to 6mm standard thread. The drill bit and tap are also shown in the photo.
The instructions included with the adapter were very informative and indicated using Permatex #2 sealant when assembling. Soon I will paint the tank and assemble all these parts.
Note - The drill and tap were in stock at my local ACE (surprise) - there is not an exact size bit for a 6mm tap - I am using a #8 bit which seems to be as close as you can get. The petcock has on/off/ reserve.
Drilled and tapped three holes for mounting. Mounted adapter and screwed in petcock to make sure on/off handle would fall on the outside. Removed petcock coated with Prematex and re-installed. Removed entire assembly for paint. Hopefully nothing will leak.
Non-stock Petcock - update
Replacement petcock
The same petcock and adapter I put on mine yesterday. Tha only thing I did different was to use jis screws just in case I return to original petcock. It works good and looks to be of good quality.
