Still running rich-found the solution

Post by britman » Sat Mar 14, 2009 5:10 pm

If any of you out there are like me and tried everything under the sun to cure a richness problem I think I have found the solution. On my latest CL77 project I installed 120 mains, but it still kept the plugs sooty even kicked up a notch on the needle and still produced a ton of blue smoke on start up, with no choke of course. I finally found a set of NOS needle jets on ebay thanks to Fastfred and what a world of difference. No more smoke, after having to choke it to get it started, and much cleaner throttle response. Upon comparing the old needle jets I removed to the new ones, the wear was more than visible to the naked eye. It is raining here now so I can't get it out to do the final dial in, but wait to the sun comes out. Damn someone needs to produceing these jets again.

Did you have any difficulty getting the old jets out?

Nope,

Brass punch with a slight tap, they were laying on the bench. I did put a little heat on each one prior.

As those parts are just pressed (not that tight of a fit) in place ya don't need to pre-heat just tap from the slide side. Did the repair solve the blue smoke at start up? I'm curious because the needle isn't in play until ya raise the slide. ...............lm

Ed,

There is still a little blue smoke on start up, but I was just happy to have to use the choke for a change. I need to head out with a plug wrench, extra set of plugs, warm day with some open road and do some high rev shut downs to do my final tuning. Upon checking the plugs after starting and running in the garage they are still a little rich but look allot better than before. You can see some nice tan brown around the electrodes. It is still cold and raining here, so it is still on hold.

I wonder why these jets are not part of the Keytser kits that are sold?Running rich seems to be a very common problem on these 305's.

Usually the needle jet is OK.
I've rebuilt/worked on about 80+- and have never seen a warn needle or needle jet.
I guess I'm just lucky.
I did have a feller send me a set of CB72 carbs which ran and idled rich and when I removed the slow jets I could easily see they were apx. 4 times standard.
Replaced them with std. and his problem was solved. ...........lm
