how tight should carb manifold nuts be?

Post by plankspanker » Sat Apr 25, 2015 4:02 pm

Experiencing binding of carb slides (as mentioned in this forum) when assembling carbs to mounting studs. Wondering if folks could weigh in on just how tight these nuts must be? Or, perhaps I should be asking just how LOOSE may these nuts be?
My thinking is that they should only be tightened until the lock washer flattens and that the O-rings will prevent air leaks; i.e., it might be acceptable to have a very small gap visible between the carb flange and the spacer? All thoughts appreciated!

The O-ring provides the sealing, as you say, but the insulator provides mechanical support for the carb. Nip up the nuts so that the insulator is touching all around but only just......

Anything more will start to bow the carb flange. Put a straight edge across it to see if it has already happened.

On my CB77 I put 6mm nylock nuts so you can back them off without them coming loose, the standard studs are a little bit on the short side so like LM says leave off the washers and there is just enough stud for the nylock nut to hold on to. Over tightening them nuts will make the slide stick, it on my bike.
