PW26 vs Amal 626

Post by Waveblaster » Tue May 06, 2014 1:03 am

Hi

Interest in any feedback on the Amal carbs over stock. Are people using these due to worn originals? Or are there benefits beyond?

Have acquired a box with Amal 626s . Also 928s and 930s which I assume might be usable if building a ported race motor.

regards

Greg

Please refer to my thread 'Japan Meets Britain' in the 'Racers/Customs/Choppers' section regarding Amal 626's. If you have them and are looking to make a change, they are a good choice (at least they've been that way for my bike, 20,000 miles and counting). Parts are readily available new, and they are relatively simple in design. That said, they are limited in terms of adjustments. If I could recommend one upgrade to them, I'd suggest getting the hardened anodised slides for them (they no longer make the chrome plated versions).

Cheers Vince

I enjoyed reading your thread. Your passion for your bike is admirable.
Just to summarise what I digested, the 240 Amal main jet is about right for a standard 305? is that the equivalent of a 135 or 140 PW26 main?

Certainly seems like Amal spares are well priced

regards

Greg

I'm not completely up on all the ins and outs of the jetting (as I was merely a test pilot during the adjustment phase), but they seemed to work pretty well right out of the box. We did change to a 2.5 slide, but I can't say for certain what number Amal jet is equivalent to a PW26 jet.

Hi again -- I just did some searching here on the forum for anything related to Amal, and I came up with a very old post from when I first had the carbs installed (June 2007). Can't believe it's already been 7 years.

Anyhow, here are the numbers straight out of the box: 160 main, cutaway throttle valve 3, 106 Pilot, standard Amal needle. Of course, this is before I went crazy with the big bore kit, etc etc, so these numbers would be a good starting point for a stock SuperHawk. Hope this helps.
