can anyone tell me what the symptoms are for a leaky float?

Usually rich-running and/or fuel leaking out the overflow. Remove it and give it a shake. If it's leaking you'll hear fuel sloshing around in there. Usually a little crack somewhere or a pinhole. Not worth trying to fix, Honda has new ones.
