Stick a phillips screwdriver into the spark plug wire boot so that it contacts the metal piece inside, hold the shaft of the screwdriver a few mm away from the engine and crank it over. If you see a spak jump, you got spark.

Yeah, so no spark trying the screwdriver thing with either the kick start or electric start. I also tried both wires. What would be the next step then? New wires?

I can see that the spark plug wires connect to an item in the right side cover. What are all these items? I know the orange thing is the rectifier, but am not clear on the black vertical cylinder or the white horizontal cylinder.

Starter solenoid, coil.
Have you cleaned the points?
Do you have 12 volts at the coil with the key in the on position.
Next time ya check for spark remove/use one of the plugs with the engine end touching the engine and the cap on the end it is now. ............lm

Thanks for the response... lm. I'm a total noob to this whole process and learning as I go so any advice will have to be explained like I'm a 5 year old.

After reading your response and some other posts, I was going to start with the following:

In the picture above, I'm assuming the white cylinder is the coil and the black is the solenoid. Is that correct? If not please let me know.I'm assuming I can check for the volts at the coil with the key in the on position with an ohm meter.
