Sure enough, fouling the center stand spring. What's with tire measurments anyway...a 400X18 turns out to be a 4.5X18!! while I'm on the subject..I ordered a new center stand spring and got the correct part from my local Honda dealer but Yikes! how do you put that thing on. Maybe hook up the SUV to one end of it while chaining the bike to the garage. Anybody got a trick?

Two tricks. One is to fit the spring first and then one side bolt and then the other

Or the oldest trick in the book.

Place one end of teh spring in a vice. bend it one way and insert a coin or thick washer. bend it in the opposite direction and insert a second coin opposite the first one. Repeat until the spring is long enough.

Attach spring to bike.

Rotate stand to the upright position

Collect pile of coins from garage floor.

Done. I read that in an old m/s repair book printed before I was born and that was a long time ago.

Teazer,
I love that one, my Dad told me that about 60 years ago, after I had been working for about 2 hours and had skinned up probably every knuckle I had. I never forgot it and was nice to hear it again. Thanks, Cliff

Teazer what a great idea! I'm going to try that and had given thought to the one bolt at a time idea. I had rejected the prying with 2 screwdrivers method as a friend tried that and is now blind in one eye from the screwdriver slipping . thanks for the tips.

headlight switch

Before I take it apart.........according to the schematic the headlight switch has 3 positions, left , dash and tailight, right, headlight and extra charging coil. Apparently there is a centre position where nothing is connected. My switch has no central indent where there are no connections made and I'm thinking of disassembly to see what is going on in there. Can anyone offers an opinion on my observations? Thanks a lot guys.
