I put the new transmission in the case today for a test fit. It was also my way of inspecting the parts. Wow! They are definitely nicer than the original parts. The kick start pawl, the 14mm bushing, the dogs - everything. That gearbox came from a low mileage engine, no doubt. Oh - those seals will be replaced!
Now, to join the "X" debate. Should I or shouldn't I? And then, if I do - what do I do?

If my bike is any indication, while you have your bike apart, it's only about an hour more work to split the cases. I'd not hesitate to do it!
I'm resigned to the fact that I'll have to split the cases at this point. How will I know if the kickstart pawl is worn out, though?
I'll get a picture of the pawl from my engine tomorrow. The wear is pretty obvious once the piece is out where it can be inspected.

Excellent! Thank you, Tom.
BTW, here's a photo of a worn kick start pawl. You can see the wear (quite a lot) on the left top surface of the thing.

More work was done today. The transmission was X-ed. More cleaning of parts was completed. I need a seal kit, some Hondabond 4, and a cam chain, and then I can put the cases back together. X-ing the gearbox was pretty simple. I just had to make sure my feeble brain had the correct gears going to the correct spots! Thank heavens for digital cameras. By the way - there are 12 "loose" roller bearings in the transmission. Oh yes, I spilled them all over the place. I found them all and got them all back in there!
Un-X-ed

Question? Before I get too far ahead of myself, is there a "position" the shift drum needs to be in before I reassemble the shifter mechanism? Or, does it not matter?
