Mufflers  -  Silencers

The Honda CB72/77 dual exhaust consists of the header pipes, mufflers and removable baffles. This is the easy part. Beyond that, the variations begin. Here is some of what we know:

The earliest bikes were fitted with a "two-piece" system. In reality, that system consisted of more than two parts, but the main components - the header pipe and the muffler (silencer) -  were two distinct parts. A packing sleeve was located between the two and the header collar could slip on and off, once the pipe was separated from the muffler.

The mufflers, on some of the earlier two-piece systems, were made of stainless steel and are the rarest items to be found.

As Honda production ramped up, the two piece systems became all metal, eventually being merged into a one-piece system, where the header pipe was welded to the muffler. As these bikes gained prominence a sufficient aftermarket developed. Mufflers began to be produced by third parties, in the late nineteen sixties and throughout the seventies. In some cases, the quality was decent, in others, not so good, and very little standardization occurred. As a result, some aftermarket systems came with removable baffles and others with the baffles welded permanently in place. So long snuff-or-nots!

Until very recently, if you ended up with a rusted out or badly dented muffler, on a decent header, your options were limited. As the NOS sources for the Honda mufflers dried up, the prices for good exhaust systems escalated. People have been known to grind off the weld joints, slip the muffler off the header pipe and then to grind the longitudinal seam apart, in order to remove the muffler dents from the inside. After that, one would weld the muffler pieces back together before taking it to be re-chromed. The other option was to pay an exorbitant amount money to secure a show set of CB72/77 mufflers.

These days things are beginning to look better for the collecting and restoring public. Modern reproduction muffler systems are coming to market, with an ever increasing attention to detail and quality of materials and workmanship. The best example of the modern reproduction mufflers comes from the UK, distributed by David Silver, known in the hobby for his vintage NOS Honda parts business - David Silver Spares.
