How to remove the kick start lever to replace clutch cable?

Post by Spargett » Fri Dec 12, 2008 4:43 pm

I'm trying to replace my clutch cable. I can't figure out how to get the kick start lever off to pull off the crankcase. It looks like I have to do something with the bolt located on the bottom (see photos). Any advice is appreciated.

P.S. I suspect that the crankcase cover is for a dream. But I can't confirm it for sure.

UPDATE: I spoke to the previous owner. The kickstart shaft is for a CL77. Not sure how much this affects my issue.

My kick starter is splined w/ a pinch bolt in the lever right at the shaft. Looks as though its been modified w/ a different style. Did you try removing that E clip and remove the pin? Sorry I'm not more help. I'm new to this.

No, I wasn't sure exactly how to approach the removal of the pin. It looked like there was a specific way to nuzzle it out. God forbid I fall back to brute force and break the thing.

You don't have to remove the kick start lever to remove the side cover. Just take the screws out and pull it off.

Hmmm, great to know. I removed the 6 side cover screws but it felt like it was still locked in right where the kick start lever was. So I assumed that I needed to remove that due what seemed like the kickstart lever being locked in underneath somewhere. I was hesitant of trying to pry off the thing with too much force and bending or breaking something thats near impossible to replace.

So it's just those 6 screws on crankcase cover?

remove stator cover

Remove the stator cover, there's two more screws under there. #32 on your picture I think. I had same problem six months ago, even after removing kick starter. Luckily have a great advisor. Book's not always much help to ignorant folks like us. Have fun, your bike will look better with correct clutch cable.

I see the screws you're referring to, but the crankcase cover will come off right over the stator no problem. The problem is this kickstart shaft. I have no idea how to get this thing out. I called the previous owner to which he replied:
"I don't do any of the wrenching, I asked a mechanic to put a CL77 kickstart shaft in, you'll have to ask the mechanic".
I was able to get the kickstart lever off, but the shaft remains. And as I said have no idea how to get that out since it still seems locked in to turn the motor over. Ideas? I'm totally stuck here.
