LM

You have to grind the spline to make that happen, don't you?

G,

You do need to grind to re-index. I've done it, piece-o-cake.

Dream Hop Up

Post by conbs » Sat Mar 23, 2013 8:52 pm

Greener,

Jensen has a couple of posts about hopping up a Dream. Port, flow and polish the head and use CL cam and carb. Reported to give a noticeable increase in torque. That and electronic ignition are reasonably easy upgrades.

The electronic ignition would add enormous reliability. Getting the carb jetted will take a little bit of doing. I plan to use a Colortune. Once its set it should be very reliable as well.

I don't know about the EFI setup in terms of space. If you found small enough units, you might be able to use a CL head and get around the clearance issues with the frame. I have never researched the EFI option, but it seems like it would be a lot of work and expense for not much gain.

I don't know for sure what I did, but the brakes on my '65 are working really well now. I still have not made a plan for suspension improvements, but the Dream sure needs something.

My $0.02. Let us know what you decide and keep us posted on your progress. There are a finite number of parts to a Dream. Take 'em one piece at a time and you will eventually get there.

Thank you everyone for the replies so far. After the tear-down I inspected all the components. I noticed a "tear" in the frame just above the lower motor mount. This "tear"may have been from from the PO's rough treatment or a design flaw.Assuming it was due to a design flaw, adding more torque is not an option. As far as space concerns for the injectors, that is a valid point and will receive due diligence.I have read a lot about the carbs in various threads and have come to the conclusion that they are troublesome and can lead to more internal engine concerns over the long haul. Are there certain years of CB/CL heads better suited for my application?I E;oil gallery number and position,or will any dual carb 305 work? You guys are the greatest, even L M.Greener.

Greener

If you go the EFI route you should look at improved voltage regulation for the electrical system. Charlies Place in SF has some combined regulator-rectifiers listed. Like everything on the Dream, the electrics are basic.

Have fun!

As I understand your comments, your quest is not for more power but to avoid problems that you think might be lurking in an old carb.

Sure carbs can be a source of much frustration, but the most effective solution to that particular issue would be EFI with a wideband O2 sensor and some time on a dyno.

On the ignition side, a points cam mounted on a quill shaft inside a cam with a long and unsupported drive chain is not state of the art management. The trigger should be on the crank and it's not too hard to adapt a modern pickup and use a programmable Ignitech ignition system. Their recommended pick up is not suitable for running in oil, so think about which side of teh crank to tie it to. Modern bikes have their pickups in oil, so use one of those if you go that way.

Or fit a modified GL1000 DYNA on the cam and rebuild the carb. That's much cheaper but not as challenging.
