Valve cover gasket?

Post by yellow60 » Sun Jan 16, 2011 9:18 am

I put back together a 67 CA77 motor last night after new rings and seals. After patting myself on the back I decided to tear down another old seized motor I believe this one to be a 1965. The question I have is the 1965 has a metal gasket/cover that covers the valves. It is large flat piece with a rectangle cut out where the timing chain runs through. To help better describe this is the first thing you see after you remove the eight acorn nuts on top of the motor and remove the top of the motor. My 1967 did not have this metal and they only uses a gasket with the valves visible. What gives?

Thanks Adam

Thanks for the fast response Loud Mouse. Does a gasket go on each side of the metal?

valve cover gasket

I can attest to the importance of the valve cover and putting the cover on with the 2 small rectangular holes facing the front of the bike.

Read my post about engine blow by. I rebuilt my Dream engine and forgot to replace the plate when I put it back together. I had an extreme amount of oil coming out of the engine breather hose. I fought that thing for about 7 months trying to figure it out. Loud mouse finally steered me in the right direction, but when I put the plate ,I put it back on with the 2 holes facing the back of the bike. I still had the blow by. After speaking to lm by phone he reminded me that the 2 holes should face forward.

I reinstalled the plate and the blow by is gone.

You guy have already saved me a lifetime of frustration in the last few months.
I have never met loud mouse but I imagine him at a Honda manufacturing plant with a section full of restored Honda's with a team of employees around him helping answering questions for us all.

Thanks a million.
