Denso points & points cam

Here's a question for those who are more familiar with these engines. I know these engines had two different types of points. This bike has the Denso type. The question is whether Honda used more than one type of points cams in the 305 engines? Or, did Honda have more than one type of Denso points? The reason I ask is that I wasn't able to get the standard Denso points to work on the stock denso points mounting/adjustment plate without modifying them. When I installed the standard Denso points, the points are open all the time (open a small amount at the low point of the points cam lobe and open quite a bit at the high point of the points cam lobe regardless of how I adjust the points on the plate). I had to shave down the part of the points assembly that contacts the points cam in order to allow the points to completely close, and to allow them to be adjusted to the proper gap. In addition, I had to rotate the points mounting/adjustment plate all the way to the right (clockwise), and the timing was still slightly off (points opening slightly early). I cheated a little, and filed the adjustment holes to allow the plate to be adjusted slightly further to the right (further clockwise). The points gap and the timing are now both correct, and the bike runs fine. But, I don't like doing this sort of thing, because I know I am either using the wrong part, or there's something I have done wrong. I have attached pictures of a points assembly, and have circled the sections I have modified. Also, I have tried two different sets of points that were advertised as CA77 Denso points - They were ordered from two different suppliers, and both had the same issue. Any ideas?

Did you do any other work to the engine?
Have you compared the old part with the new part?. .........lm

Yes, I removed everything from the head (cams, valves, valve springs, and cam sprocket) in order to vapor hone the head and lap the valves. I was careful to organize all parts and reinstall them exactly as they were removed. I've done this MANY times on other engines, and can't imagine that this would be the problem (although it wouldn't be the first time I've gooned something up). It's as if the points I am using are completely different than what I need. Unfortunately, I tossed the old points when I disassembled the engine - so I can't compare them. The ones I am using now started out looking exactly like the ones in this picture, before I made the modifications. As mentioned, I have used the "field expedient" method to solve my problem, so the engine runs fine. But, I'd sure like for everything to be done correctly. This kind of "fix" bothers me.

somethings wanky here. did the engine run before you did the head work? If so, you are probably off a tooth on the timing chain. If not, or you don't know, then the whole points assembly is in doubt. there are several variations of base plates/points.
to answer your question about the points cam, there are only two versions. Hawk & dream. not interchangeable at all.
